Level Design
Level Design is one of the courses taught at NHTV. It focuses on teaching the students how to create a level with good gameflow, that adheres to the requirements bound to a certain game or game type and is interesting and challenging for the player. During the courses I have familiarized myself with tools such as the Unreal Developement Kit, Unity and Google Sketchup Make.
I've personally always had an interest for level design, and specifically experimenting with different ways of using the tools at hand to create an interesting level concept with a unique feel. Before starting my studies in Game Design, I already created levels in map editors for games like Battlefield 1942 and StarCraft II. My goal in designing a level is always to maintain the core principles of the game, while also trying something completely new. That way I prevent the levels from becoming a dime a dozen, and make sure they always offer the player something interesting that they haven't experienced before.
